According to the Ministry of Energy, the ongoing reforms in the power sector are yielding positive results: Tariff Reduction : Between March 2024 and May 2026, average national electricity tariffs decreased by up to 20% . (A reduction of 31% is claimed for protected consumers, 16% for regular domestic consumers, and 33% for industrial consumers). Loss Reduction: Distribution Companies ( DISCOs ) reduced their losses by Rs. 193 billion within one year. IPPs Contract Revision: Revisions to contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have resulted in savings of Rs. 3.5 trillion (3,500 billion) in future payments. Electricity Subsidy for Protected Consumers Will Continue (Federal Minister for Energy) Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari, during a press conference, rejected rumors claiming that the government is ending the subsidy for consumers using fewer than 200 units. QR Code and Registration System: A new registration system has been introduced to ensure transparent delivery of the subsidy. Consumers must link their Computerized National Identity Card ( CNIC ) with their meter via a QR code. So far, more than 2 million single-phase consumers have registered. Number of Consumers and Volume: Over the past 4 years, the number of protected consumers using fewer than 200 units has grown from 9.5 million to 21.5 million.
